Bismarck sunk by Royal Navy

On May 27, 1941, the British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic near France. The German death toll was more than 2,000.On February 14, 1939, the 823-foot Bismarck was launched at Hamburg. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler hoped that the state-of-the-art battleship would herald the rebirth of the German surface battle fleet. However, after the outbreak of war, Britain closely guarded ocean routes from Germany to the Atlantic Ocean, and only U-boats moved freely through the war zone.In May 1941, the order was given for the Bismarck to break out into the Atlantic. Once in the safety of the open ocean, the battleship would be almost impossible to track down, all the while wreaking havoc on Allied convoys to Britain. Learning of its movement, Britain sent almost the entire British Home Fleet in pursuit. On May 24, the British battle cruiser Hood and battleship Prince of Wales intercepted it near Iceland. In a ferocious battle, the Hood exploded and sank, and all but three of the 1,421 crewmen were killed. The Bismarck escaped, but because it was leaking fuel it fled for occupied France. On May 26, it was sighted and crippled by British aircraft, and on May 27 three British warships descended on the Bismarckand finished it off.

Why Buhari Must Reverse Sale Of PHCN By Kikiowo Ileowo

Embedded image permalink

As I write this article, Nigeria is in a ‘shut down’ mode. It is a step short of Armageddon. The princes of hell have descended on us and they are having a good time. Nearly everything has grinded to a halt.
The Federal Government is practically nonexistent. Remaining Federal Government appointees who haven’t gone on a self-imposed exile are having a ‘good’ day looting the economy; there is no time for governance. Equipment, motor vehicles and government properties are mutating – growing wings and flying to destinations unknown.
Worse still, petroleum products like PMS, AGO, ATK, GAS etc are unavailable. In fact, it is easier to get gold stones on the ground than buy fuel. Transportation from Lagos to Ibadan is harder than Lagos to New York, little wonder unemployed Nigerians are trekking all over the country to felicitate with their political mentors.
Pardon the ranting, let go back to the subject matter. For those who live outside the country, understand that much of Nigeria’s territorial part is in complete darkness, thanks to the clueless, rudderless and hip hazard government of a happenstance president called Goodluck Jonathan.
I will explain the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) privatization under Jonathan with a simple analogy, thus sparing you all the technical jargons and grammar.
Imagine your father built a mansion with a huge part of his life’s saving. He buys a land, and then painstakingly begins to build for several years. Years gone past, the house is not yet ready and not big enough for your family of 20, but you start living in it anyway. Since the house is originally built for 7, you need to build more and expand right?
However, instead of your father sourcing for funds to maintain and complete the building and them build more, he sells the house. With no place to live, the entire family continues to live in the house; difference is the family now pays rent to the new owner.
Sadly, the proceeds from the sales is not enough to cover the cost of buying the land or building nor the interior decoration, however, he goes ahead with it. With no profit, the proceeds from the sales is used to lay off workers ie pay gratuity and severance package of the gardener, house help and nanny.
After these sales, a new problem emerges; the new owner cannot really maintain the house. So the owner recalls the same garner, house help and nanny you paid severance package to come continue with their work since they know the in and out of the house.
Months after the transaction, it was discovered the new owner can’t keep up with the maintenance. So the head of the home aside from paying rents begins to give the new owner a huge sum called Intervention Fund so they can sink a borehole and carry out other sundry projects around the house.
Interestingly, the fund is not enough to maintain the house.
Fellow Nigerians, this is the situation we find ourselves today. The head of the home is the Federal Government. The children are Nigerians, the gardeners, house help and nanny are the sacked PHCN staff. The new owners are the GENCOs and DISCOs.
This analogy aptly describes the power sector. We sold our national heritage to a gang of inadequate poster boys, a process that has siphoned more money from the federal coffers and given us less electricity.
Nigeria is worse from that transaction. I am using a 10 litre fuel bought at the rate of N500 PER LITRE. Should I tell you half of is is water? Well, that is a story for another day.
We are paying more for less electricity thanks to those in charge of the privatization process.
Understand that Mr Atedo Peterside, chairman Technical Committee of NCP, shouted to the high heavens when companies which failed woefully in the Net Present Value, NPV, and threshold assessment of the Technical Committee were corruptly handed power assets.
Today, we are generating as a country, a little below 1200MW – not enough to power Heathrow Airport. The figure represents the lowest electricity production output in a decade.
Despite the fact that the fraudulent winner companies are unable to meet the original intendment of privatisation; which is the revamping of our electricity substructure, they continue the arbitrary increase in tariff out of the range approved by the Multi Year Tariff Order of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.
The model as presently operated is not sustainable. Providing electricity of not, each DISCO makes a minimum guaranteed N1bn monthly in fixed charge.
The popular maxim in developed capitalist economy is that government has no business in Business, but it doesn’t hold true here.
Buhari’s government needs to intervene in this critical sector of the economy. We can’t allow this business men to continue running a critical national infrastructure as power. Aside the fact that these guys can hold us to ransom as seen in the case of the oil marketers, the primary aim of GENCOs and DISCOs is to make money, not generate and distribute electricity respectively.
If the system as presently constituted guarantees them profit in the name of fixed charge, with or without generating and distributing electricity, then they wouldn’t even bother trying to produce some.
The government of Buhari needs to invoke the doctrine of necessity in the power sector. He needs to compulsorily take back this critical infrastructure from the hands of these inexperienced buyers.
Failure to do this and/or give us stable electricity by 2019, Nigerians may treat General Buhari the same way they treated Goodluck Jonathan at the next general election.

5 Habits of Successful Savers & Investors

Oluwakorede Asuni

1. They Set Aside Today’s Money for Future Goals

Successful savers and investors think ahead. They don’t just live for today and let tomorrow sort itself out. They put financial capital toward savings and investing goals that are important to them — retirement, paying for a child’s education, etc.

2. They Stick to Their Goals

A key to successful saving and investing is consistency. They stick to their savings and investing goals month after month and year after year. Savings is a given in their monthly budget and they know it is an essential part of meeting future financial goals.

3. They Plan for Emergencies

Successful savers and investors know that financial emergencies happen. And they have money set aside for these occasions.
Three to six months’ worth of living expenses is a good savings goal for an emergency fund.
But even having a couple thousand dollars tucked away in a savings account can make a big difference to staying on track with finances when a large financial expense comes your way.

4. They Pay Themselves First

Successful savers and investors put their savings goals first. Before anything else, money from their paychecks gets put aside for saving and investing – 10% is a good starting point.
Depending on their income and other financial commitments, some savers and investors are able to dedicate 25% of their income and even more to saving and investing.
So get in the habit of saving first. Whenever that money from a paycheck hits your checking account, move a chunk to savings and stick with this pattern month after month. Consider saving before the money hits your checking account by joining an employer’s 401(k) plan and having pre-tax money set aside for retirement.  Opening an individual retirement account is another good saving and investing option.

5. They Live Below Their Means

Successful savers and investors live below their means. If they spent every penny that they earned, they wouldn’t have the money to set aside for future goals.
To be a successful saver, you must spend less than you earn on a consistent basis.
If on the other hand, you are spending beyond your earning capacity and monthly income, you will accumulate debt, making it more difficult for you to save.  You also risk damaging your credit if you overextend yourself on debt and fall behind on your payments. You can see how your debts are affecting your credit by getting your free credit report summary on Credit.com.
When you borrow, you must pay back all that you borrowed and all the accumulated interest and finance charges owed to lenders.
Borrow too much and the money that could be put aside for savings and future goals gets paid to lenders instead. To see just how much the money you are borrowing is costing you, use thislifetime cost of debt calculator.

Joke of the day

In a tiny village lived an old maid. In spite of her old age, she was still a virgin. She was very proud of it. She knew her last days were getting closer, so she told the local undertaker that she wanted the following inscription on her tombstone: "Born as a virgin, lived as a virgin, died as a virgin." Not long after, the old maid died peacefully, and the undertaker told his men what the lady had said. The men went to carve it in, but the lazy no-goods they were, they thought the inscription to be unnecessarily long. They simply wrote: "Returned unopened."

Dracula goes on sale in London

The first copies of the classic vampire novel Dracula, by Irish writer Bram Stoker, appear in London bookshops on this day in 1897.
A childhood invalid, Stoker grew up to become a football (soccer) star at Trinity College, Dublin. After graduation, he got a job in civil service at Dublin Castle, where he worked for the next 10 years while writing drama reviews for the Dublin Mail on the side. In this way, Stoker met the well-respected actor Sir Henry Irving, who hired him as his manager. Stoker stayed in the post for most of the next three decades, writing Irving’s voluminous correspondence for him and accompanying him on tours in the United States. Over the years, Stoker began writing a number of horror stories for magazines, and in 1890 he published his first novel, The Snake’s Pass.

Court orders NDLEA to vacate Kashamu ikoyi house

Justice Ibrahim Buba has ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, officials to vacate the residence of Buruji Kashamu, the senator-elect for Ogun East Senatorial District, in Lekki, Lagos.
Giving the order on Tuesday, Buba said the status quo be maintained.
The NDLEA, whose operatives had laid siege on Kashamu’s residence in Lagos since Saturday, said it had received a formal extradition request on Kashamu from the government of the United States of America and was coming to court to secure an extradition order.
But Buba, in a bench ruling pronounced the action of the NDLEA as subjudice and ordered the men of the Nigerian police to ensure that NDLEA operatives vacate Kashamu’s premises “without a free for all.”

kashamu nickname 'god'

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade, Sunday explained how the agency was able to get alleged drug trafficker, now Senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu, under house arrest in Lagos.

Officials of the agency had on Saturday stormed the Lekki home of Kashamu, who was allegedly nick-named “God” in the US, and got him restrained therein.

THISDAY gathered that to place Kashamu on house arrest, the agency had disarmed Kashamu's personal guards manning his gates.

The statement went on to state that as at the time of his arrest, the agency allowed Kashamu’s legal attorneys – Daniel Onamusi and Barrister Oloyede – and close family members, including his wife and adult daughters, to speak with him and attest to his well-being.

The agency said the house arrest was preparatory to his being extradited to the United States of America, where he would be tried for drug trafficking-related offences.

Giade made these disclosures in a statement issued by the agency's Head of Public Affairs, Mitchel Ofoyeju.

The NDLEA boss said Kashamu has been a target of both the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for over 20 years.

He said the house arrest is sequel to a formal request for extradition which the agency received from the Embassy of the United States of America pending his arraignment before the Federal High Court on Monday, May 25, 2015.

He said the senator-elect was indicted in the Northern District of Illinois, United States on charges brought against him by ICE.

The statement reads in part, "Kashamu, who U.S. court documents alleged was known in his days as the leader of a prolific heroin trafficking ring based in Chicago, Illinois as “God,” “Daddy,” and “Kasmal,” is wanted to stand trial for charges of conspiracy and importation of controlled substances, namely heroin, into the United States dating back to 1994.

"Kashamu, who holds dual Nigerian/Beninese citizenship, has taken multiple preemptive actions to thwart U.S. extradition efforts such as making fanciful claims that his is a case of mistaken identity, and that his deceased brother is responsible for the crimes he is being sought after in the United States.

1977

Star Wars opens

On this day in 1977, Memorial Day weekend opens with an intergalactic bang as the first of George Lucas’ blockbuster Star Wars movies hits American theaters.
The incredible success of Star Wars–it received seven Oscars, and earned $461 million in U.S. ticket sales and a gross of close to $800 million worldwide–began with an extensive, coordinated marketing push by Lucas and his studio, 20th Century Fox, months before the movie’s release date. “It wasn’t like a movie opening,” actress Carrie Fisher, who played rebel leader Princess Leia, later toldTime magazine. “It was like an earthquake.” Beginning with–in Fisher’s words–“a new order of geeks, enthusiastic young people with sleeping bags,” the anticipation of a revolutionary movie-watching experience spread like wildfire, causing long lines in front of movie theaters across the country and around the world.
With its groundbreaking special effects, Star Wars leaped off screens and immersed audiences in “a galaxy far, far away.” By now everyone knows the story, which followed the baby-faced Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as he enlisted a team of allies–including hunky Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and the robots C3PO and R2D2–on his mission to rescue the kidnapped Princess Leia from an Evil Empire governed by Darth Vader. The film made all three of its lead actors overnight stars, turning Fisher into an object of adoration for millions of young male fans and launching Ford’s now-legendary career as an action-hero heartthrob.
Star Wars was soon a bona-fide pop culture phenomenon. Over the years it has spawned five more feature films, five TV series and an entire industry’s worth of comic books, toys, video games and other products. Two big-screen sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and The Return of the Jedi (1983), featured much of the original cast and enjoyed the same success–both critical and commercial–as the first film. In 1999, Lucas stretched back in time for the fourth installment, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, chronologically a prequel to the original movie. Two other prequels, Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith(2005) followed.
The latter Star Wars movies featured a new cast–including Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen–and have generally failed to earn the same amount of critical praise as the first three films. They continue to score at the box office, however, with Revenge of the Sith becoming the top-grossing film of 2005 in the United States and the second worldwide.

In Washington, D.C., humanitarians Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons found the American National Red Cross, an organization established to provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters in congruence with the International Red Cross.Barton, born in Massachusetts in 1821, worked with the sick and wounded during the American Civil War and became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” for her tireless dedication. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln commissioned her to search for lost prisoners of war, and with the extensive records she had compiled during the war she succeeded in identifying thousands of the Union dead at the Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp. She was in Europe in 1870 when the Franco-Prussian War broke out, and she went behind the German lines to work for the International Red Cross. In 1873, she returned to the United States, and four years later she organized an American branch of the International Red Cross. The American Red Cross received its first U.S. federal charter in 1900. Barton headed the organization into her 80s and died in 1912.

Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis receive patent for blue jeans

On this day in 1873, San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Reno, Nevada, tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world’s most famous garments: blue jeans.
Born Loeb Strauss in Buttenheim, Bavaria, in 1829, the young Strauss immigrated to New York with his family in 1847 after the death of his father. By 1850, Loeb had changed his name to Levi and was working in the family dry goods business, J. Strauss Brother & Co. In early 1853, Levi Strauss went west to seek his fortune during the heady days of the Gold Rush.
In San Francisco, Strauss established a wholesale dry goods business under his own name and worked as the West Coast representative of his family’s firm. His new business imported clothing, fabric and other dry goods to sell in the small stores opening all over California and other Western states to supply the rapidly expanding communities of gold miners and other settlers. By 1866, Strauss had moved his company to expanded headquarters and was a well-known businessman and supporter of the Jewish community in San Francisco. culled from history.com

Brush up on hygiene. Many people don't know how to brush their teeth properly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all. Lots of people don’t brush for long enough, don’t floss and don’t see a dentist regularly. Hold your toothbrush in the same way that would hold a pencil, and brush for at least two minutes.

This includes brushing the teeth, the junction of the teeth and gums, the tongue and the roof of the mouth. And you don't need a fancy, angled toothbrush – just a sturdy, soft-bristled one that you replace each month. culled from health24.com

The new results show thatchildren with asthma may benefit from testing for peanut sensitivity, the researchers said.
"I think if a child with asthma is having difficulty controlling their symptoms — wheezing and coughing — that their parents may want to think about getting them tested for peanuts and other sensitivities, just to see if that may be contributing to why [their asthma] can't be controlled," said study author Dr. Robert Cohn of Mercy Children's Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.
